The Boys & Girls Clubs of Dundee Township - National Model for STEM Youth Workforce Readiness
In 2022, we began work with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dundee Township (BGCDT), which serves 2,000 youth at 14 locations in the Northwest Chicago suburbs. After an initial review of the Club’s structure and strategy, we decided to focus on making it the national model for STEM youth workforce readiness, tying it to federal, state, and corporate priorities for talent creation. Below is a list of key highlights.
In June 2024, Sens. Dick Durbin and Rep. Jan Schakowsky cited BGCDT’s work in a letter to Secretary Miguel Cardona offering recommendations on a newly funded mentorship program at the Department of Education.
On May 23, BGCDT joined with the Technology and Manufacturing Association to host the Workforce Summit on Innovative Strategies at OTTO Engineering. As a testament to BGCDT’s ability to convene leaders at all levels, Brynt Parmeter, the first-ever Chief Talent Management Officer at the Department of Defense.
On May 1, 2024, we secured the Club’s placement alongside Microsoft and other industry leaders in a White House announcement for the STEMM Opportunity Alliance (SOA) – a first-of-its-kind national initiative to lead and coordinate cross-sector action to help achieve greater equity across STEMM fields. BGCDT marked the opportunity by announcing $6 million in public and private funds for its new STEM Impact Center, slated to open in 2025.
In January 2023, we worked with BGCDT to convene a community summit that included officials from AmeriCorps and the Department of Commerce. Surrounded by area business, education, and philanthropic leaders, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi announced a $2 million congressional earmark for the new STEM Impact Center. BGCDT will convert a closed school into a 45,000-square-foot center that will engage 600 middle and high school students in STEM-related career awareness and readiness.
KAMA DC - Strategic Growth for a Community-Based Organization
KAMA DC is a grassroots organization dedicated to promoting cultural exchange and celebrating the skills and stories of immigrants in the Greater Washington, DC region. In two separate projects funded by Humanities DC, we produced the following results:
Streamlined content from multiple sources into a centralized policies and procedure document that focused on 1) governance and structure; 2) financial compliance and fundraising; and 3) board members’ roles and responsibilities.
Developed and executed the first-ever community survey of its members and event attendees, synthesizing the key findings into an operational document that also included industry best practices on event management.
In 2023, after the organizational assessment, KAMA DC more than doubled its event revenue as it acted on recommendations to better estimate costs related to events and entered a new partnership that enabled it to become the primary host of the DC Immigrant Film Festival.
“As a growing organization focused on elevating the skills and experiences immigrants contribute to the Greater DC region, we relied on Ted to put together a structure that supported our strategy. In addition to strengthening our operating procedures, we gained a great understanding of our community and the reasons they engaged with us, which translated into more visibility and new opportunities.” - Ben Jaffe, President, KAMA DC
Bioscience Core Skills Institute - An Impact Story to Explain the Workforce of the Future
Founded by educators, the Bioscience Core Skills Institute (BCSI) works with industry partners to get the answers on the skills, degrees, or certificates needed for positions in the biotechnology industry. BCSI provides training to students, most of whom do not have a four-year degrees, that documents the skills they have (called microcredentials). We worked with BCSI’s founder to explain the impact of their work through a story about Oscar Ramirez, who holds two microcredentials issued by BCSI.
“Ted Miller is a tireless advocate and ally for organizations like ours that are creating new career pathways through skills-based learning. We were growing at a rapid pace, and Ted stepped in to connect our work to a broader narrative about workforce investment and captured an impact story about one of our program’s participants that summed up our mission in a powerful way. He converts what can be wonky and complex concepts into compelling content.” - Angela Consani, Founder and CEO, BCSI
Food Research & Action Center - Successful First Year for New Executive
In 2023, Kelly Horton, a nationally recognized leader in nutrition and food-related policy, joined the Food Research & Action Center as its first-ever Chief Program Officer. We worked with Kelly to develop a tailored executive coaching and change management program.
“One of the best things about working with Ted is that, in addition to his listening skills, he has immense management experience. He understands what it means to make hard decisions and secure buy-in from a variety of audiences to secure strategic growth. Ted’s background informs his unique approach. He integrates change management and coaching sessions in a way that makes sure the structure (how you organize your time and prioritize projects) aligns with the strategy (the big-picture goals that require intentional engagement with a range of stakeholders). Ted’s skills and sense of humor would be especially valuable to a nonprofit executive who wants to simultaneously build a collaborative culture and elevate their organization’s position as a thought leader.”- Kelly Horton, Chief Program Officer, Food Research & Action Center
