Transition and Growth Management

  • Tailored Executive Coaching and Change Management Plan

  • Organizational Assessment and Team Surveys

  • Integrated Stakeholder Approach (Board, Direct Reports, Industry Influencers)

Are you an organization preparing to welcome a new leader?

We are equipped to work hand-in-hand with executives, board members, and other involved parties to make this moment one of growth and visibility.

In the midst of a transition, organizations often have to balance managing day-to-day operations with preparing a plan for a new leader. This is our sweet spot. We work with all facets of the organization to produce three things: a common understanding of the opportunity and how each unit will contribute and benefit from this change; a rollout plan when the new person is selected that engages internal and external stakeholders; and the framework for the CEO’s first year. The framework is especially important. Together, we develop the rationale (why) and identify the risk (what) that are necessary to disrupt your sector and capitalize on this new chapter.

Below is a menu of services that will shape the process to build a one-year plan of action that introduces the new leader and capitalizes on this moment:

  • Strategic assessment and landscape analysis to determine current position and pathway to growth.

  • Staff and leadership retreats, boot camps, and community engagement sessions to build consensus and secure buy-in.

  • Internal and external surveys and interviews.

  • Stakeholder mapping and priority setting.

  • An execution phase that prioritizes stakeholders and builds out a six- to 12-month organization-wide plan of action to introduce the new CEO to internal and external audiences. This phase includes public moments as well as internal engagement to ensure institutional buy-in and awareness of the vision the new leader is bringing to this new post.

“One of the best things about working with Ted is that, in addition to his listening skills, he has immense management experience. He understands what it means to make hard decisions and secure buy-in from a variety of audiences to secure strategic growth. Ted’s background informs his unique approach. He integrates change management and coaching sessions in a way that makes sure the structure (how you organize your time and prioritize projects) aligns with the strategy (the big-picture goals that require intentional engagement with a range of stakeholders). Ted’s skills and sense of humor would be especially valuable to a nonprofit executive who wants to simultaneously build a collaborative culture and elevate their organization’s position as a thought leader.”- Kelly Horton, Chief Program Officer, Food Research & Action Center

“Ted Miller is a tireless advocate and ally for organizations like ours that are creating new career pathways through skills-based learning. We were growing at a rapid pace, and Ted stepped in to connect our work to a broader narrative about workforce investment and captured a impact story about one of our program’s participants that summed up our mission in a powerful way. He converts what can be wonky and complex concepts into compelling content.” - Angela Consani, Founder and CEO, Bioscience Core Skills Institute

Milestone Moment

  • Meeting Facilitations and Retreats

  • Community Surveys and Landscape Analysis

  • Integrated Campaign Planning

We work with leaders to ensure everyone in their organization leaves meetings about big picture initiatives refreshed and energized. Using the principles of coordination and collaboration creates strategies that inspire and the structure—namely staffing and budgeting—that brings the ideas to life.

Coordination means getting everyone on the same page regarding the definition of success, including potential new partnerships. Collaboration is the way the entire organization works together to achieve the objective. This approach enables you to establish new operating procedures that make new ventures possible for organizations. Below is a menu of services that help tear down the silos and foster coordination and collaboration:

  • Staff and leadership retreats, boot camps, and community engagement sessions to identify themes and sources of misalignment.

  • Internal and external surveys and interviews to understand each entity’s motivations for success.

  • Mapping exercise that identifies potential partnerships and develops a short- and long-term plan to reach this audience and ultimately create a joint venture.

  • Revised internal staffing structure that is clear on which departments or individuals are responsible for

  • Co-created execution phase that includes presentation to internal audiences on test case for new partnership and outline of which individuals or departments are responsible for the outreach and implementation that comes with cultivating a new relationship.

  • Refreshed content that pitches the organization in a way that is relevant to the prospective partner.

“As a growing organization focused on elevating the skills and experiences immigrants contribute to the Greater DC region, we relied on Ted to put together a structure that supported our strategy. In addition to strengthening our operating procedures, we gained a great understanding of our community and the reasons they engaged with us, which translated into more visibility and new opportunities.” - Ben Jaffe, President, KAMA DC

Silo Elimination and New Partnerships

  • Management Retreats and Strategic Planning Sessions

  • Staff Interviews and Surveys

  • Execution and Implementations Camps for Involved Teams

Nonprofits and other social impact organizations often struggle with decision-making. When the mission is to save the world, the instinct to keep adding projects to a to-do list, rather than determining priorities, is understandable.

The milestone moment is a way to break this logjam. Marking an anniversary or rolling out a big announcement, such as a new program or initiative, is a major opportunity to become more visible and effective. Together, let’s set expectations, establish a common definition of success, and create the urgency necessary to execute on priorities.

Every organization has unique circumstances as it plans for a milestone moment. We will work with you to determine what approaches best fit your institutional cultural and available resources. Please see this list of methods to maximize the moment.

  • Plan of action that includes strategic planning that covers internal staffing, system changes, roles and responsibilities for stakeholders, and budget development.

  • Timeline of key moments that incorporates lobbying priorities, research releases, and other key deliverables or announcements that elevate all parts of the organization in a streamlined fashion.

  • Post-milestone moment exercise to identify ways to incorporate long-term system changes and other findings discovered during the execution.
